Alpha Leos

Every second Wednesday the Alpha Leos meets with learners from other schools, and this body (± 50 members) does fund-raising to assist charity organisations where necessary.  Projects include visits to the old age home, organising soup kitchens, supporting the disabled and cleaning up the environment.  DP’s Alpha Leos consists of six members, two learners per grade from Gr 10 – 12.  Two Gr 9 members are introduced as new members mid-year.  Learners nominate others and teachers elect the body from the nominations.

DP Quiz

“The only source of knowledge is experience” – Einstein.  This is discovered by the Tigers annually when they take up the challenge and compete in the annual Interhouse Quiz. This challenges general knowledge in different fields and at different levels.

This Interhouse quiz is usually very exciting since the whole school forms the audience (each house occupies a quarter of the hall).  When it is time for the “fastest finger” section, each team presses a button and it causes a light bulb, the colour of their house to flicker.  The teacher judges have to be very alert as there is great competition to be the first respondent.

The quiz master also pose questions to the audience.  Tuckshop vouchers, chocolates and small amounts of money are up for grabs.

Grosvenor character-building survival course

In December several Daniel Pienaar boys usually join the Grosvenor character-building survival course. This entails eight days of fending for yourself.  No food can be taken along and you learn to live off the land.  The boys received only a hotdog, an apple, an onion and a small fruit juice.  During the eight days they have to complete an 85km hike.  There is also a 25km night-march.  The course has proven to have a very positive and powerful impact on the participants.  This is one of those experiences that you wouldn’t trade, but would definitely only attempt once.

Spiraal
